Money for abused Mount Cashel vicitims offered deal
Toronto Sun, by CP, Thursday, April 24, 2003
ST. JOHN'S, Nfld. -- Victims of abuse at the hands of Christian brothers at the Mount Cashel orphanage will receive between $20,000 and $600,000 in compensation.
But first they will have to agree to abandon all legal action against the province, police or the Roman Catholic Church -- a stipulation that angers some victims.
"The government has responsibility, liability for what went wrong," said J.J. Byrne, a former Mount Cashel resident and spokesman for victims, in an interview yesterday.
"It (the compensation package) takes away their right to sue both the government and the congregation."
Nearly 100 men have come forward with claims of physical and sexual abuse at the orphanage run by the Christian Brothers of Ireland in Canada. Nine Christian Brothers have been convicted of abuse. The orphanage was closed down in 1990 after a public inquiry was ordered into the systematic abuse of children.
Seven years ago an Ontario court ordered the liquidation of the order's assets to pay compensation to victims.
